Title: Rapid Review of Belgian Extreme Heat and Climate-related Policies

A new report by Andrea Armstrong and Wim Pulinx was launched at the BeBrit Extreme Heat Risk 2024 event at the Royal Library of Belgium on the 26 September. The report reveals critical insights into the climate preparedness of 137 Belgian cities.

The review found that while 75% of these cities have a Climate Plan, only 21% have a Heat Plan and just 22% have an Adaptation Plan.

This fragmented landscape underscores the urgent need for coordinated action to tackle extreme heat and climate risks.

Key Recommendations:

  1. Increase the adoption of Heat Action Plans across all municipalities.
  2. Expand Climate Plan coverage, particularly in Wallonia, where only 52% of cities have such plans.
  3. Enhance the development of Adaptation Plans to improve resilience.
  4. Address regional disparities in policy implementation to ensure equitable resource distribution.

This report emphasizes the importance of collaboration and proactive measures to build a climate-resilient future for all Belgian cities.
