In July 2022, the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) published the World Cities Report - Envisaging the Future of Cities. The report stresses that building resilience must be at the heart of the cities of the future. The COVID-19 pandemic has occupied global attention since 2020 but as the report warns, this is not the only threat that cities may face.
Challenges include high inflation and
unemployment, slow economic growth, looming recession, mounting public debts, supply chain disruptions, armed
conflicts, and a global food and energy crisis.
Steps to help cities adapt and respond to shocks and stresses are required such as green investment for sustainable patterns of consumption and production; the prioritization of public health; responsive urban planning and multilevel governance systems in which finance, innovation and technology play overarching roles.
